The smooth surface of the steel belt does not permit particles to become embedded on the belt, and therefore the amount of cleaning required is considerably lower than it would be necessary with other types of belts. Not only odors and rancid tastes have much chance to develop, but also the natural odors of products carried cannot be absorbed by the belt.

In many applications, all that is required for cleaning is a good hosing with hot water or steam.
Where corrosive cleaners are necessary to prevent organic deposits from building up, the belt remains unaffected. Chlorinated water or other cleaning agents do not harm the belt.
